A Literate Thinking America is Needed

The issues that is happening in the USA alludes to the above link. As great and powerful as the United States is there is still literacy problems, Even with all the resources America is lacking in many people thinking for themselves.This is the reason why America finds itself in the state that it is now because people are are not able to think for themselves therefore others will manipulate and think for them by telling them what they want to hear.

         When People cannot think and reason for themselves then others and politicians will weaponize this to their advantage. This is happening before our very eyes. You have a cult where persons refuse to look at the facts but rather hear what they want to.The sad and unfortunate thing about this is that it is always the uneducated who feels victimized and then they blame everyone and everything around them except themselves.We see now where China and immigrants are getting all the blame on the problems in America instead of the politicians focusing on the issues affecting the people and how to solve some of these problems

        I am of the opinion that the entire education system in America needs to be overhauled.You cannot boast of being great and mighty,yet many people remain hungry,homeless and a vast ethnic group of the society is brutalized by police and left to feel marginalized.The fact that America finds itself in this dilemma in this century when many Industrial democracies are looking ahead tells you that America really did not work on any of issues for a post slavery or even post World War era. It is quite obvious that many politicians would like to remain in this era.

   How does a country that claims to be so great yet still have voter suppression? How does a country so great still have issues with women's right?How can a country that is so great not give access to universal medical care?Ho can a country so great has such big issues with so many people being homeless? How can a country being so great refuses to raise minimum rates? How can a country so great not pay attention to its gun issues as many people die every year from senseless killings? You get the point of what I am saying.

Even though the article above was written sometime ago this problem still persists.The education system has got to change and this starts with changing the mindset from within the classroom itself. Defunding the police is only part of the issue. America has to change its constitutional policies also.Why are there judges who sit on supreme courts for life? Why is Mitch McConnell who blocks many legislation be allowed to sit in that position for so long. Each position should have a term limit just as the presidency."Power corrupts and absolute Power corrupts" Power unchecked is dangerous. Hence what we are seeing play out before our very eyes.

When we speak of Literacy understand that I am not just talking about reading and writing. I am speaking about the ability to rational thinking and to be able to critically comprehend arguments and to reason accordingly.Prime example is what we see during this Pandemic where many persons including politicians ignore Science and call it a hoax,even though it is happening right before our eyes. Literacy is the ability to see something for what it is and not what you want it to be.So many persons who are not of color still think racism and police brutality is not an issue in America.Saying something doesn't exist doesn't mean that it is not there.

It is going to take a movement and the coming together of everyone and political parties to build a literate thinking America so that the country can claim the true greatness that it claims.I will not hold my breath but anything is possible and the change will not happen over night.

Mental Health in Children during Covid

    

     IT can never be said enough that we are not living in normal times. With Covid 19 around the world many norms have been broken and nothing is as it seems. To say many people are stressed at this time would be an understatement. Mental health is an important factor during the duration of this virus as it takes a toll on many people in fragile situations. Many hotlines and health networks have said that suicidal thoughts and mental health problems have gone up since the start of Covid. Taking care of your mind is just as important as taking care of your body.

                         During this traumatic period way too often we forget about younger kids and how this impacts them.Mental health in children is just as important as adults.They are just as scared,confuse and anxious. Parent,Caregivers and Guardians have a key role to play in managing and sustaining children's mental health.Many children at this time are anxious to go back to school in September and this is quite understandable.There has been with the reopening of some schools and even universities cases of children being affected with the virus.

                           For those schools which will be reopened later in August or September many are still trying to figure out what is the best way or strategy for moving forward into Fall.It is up to the adults in  to take charge of this situation in trying to present a safe environment for children. A very strong relationship between adult and child is needed. Here are a few tips for parents;

1. Talk to your children about Covid based on their level,decide how to simplify based on the child's age

2. It would be wise to limit screens at this time with all the negativity and politicized news coming from the media keep it away from your children .

3. Try  to have a nurturing environment where your child can be supported,let them tell you how and what  they are feeling.Let them also express themselves through art,music songs and dance.This helps  greatly in easing one's mental state as it distracts you from the situation Even for adults.

4. Be patient with your kids and hug them often and let them know how much you love and care for  them.      

5. Try to spend time with your child and engage in a family activity together.Build a fort,have a dance   party, play board games, read a book together,draw, anything silly but just have fun as laughter is  good.This will help your child a great deal.

6. Teach them breathing techniques and how to relax when they feel anxious,take walks around your  community in order to break the routine of being inside.

7. Many parents may not have the resources needed or even the skills to help their children therefore reach out to a family,friend or organization for the help that you need.You do not have to do   this   alone.

8. Pay close attention to changes in your child's thinking,behavior or feelings.Especially special needs  children will require more attention.

9. As it gets closer to schools reopening have open discussion about what returning to school will be  like.Look at all the possibilities and scenarios. If parents are uncomfortable with their children returning to school explore all your options.Speak with someone at the school or ask them where  to  get the answers you need.                   

10. Last but not least remember to help your child build confidence  a healthy self esteem is important in managing mental health. Praise them in their efforts and be gentle in correcting them when you need arises                 

             Covid it seems will be with us for time until Scientists and other health officials grasp what this  disease is.With this in mind while managing the disease we will also have to find ways how to  manage our every day lives.Be kind to each other and reach out and check in on others.Look  after each other.Let us love and protect our children

Cat Love

                         My friend was telling me about her pets during Covid 19 and how much they refuse to let her do her job.Both her cat and dog were vying for her attention. She said they were quite more possessive than even her children. Her cat Felix was the funny as one she would jump on her key board to stop her from working and demand that she gives her undivided attention. She also would sit and watch news daily and she would signal her to turn the TV on so that she can watch her favorite news cast.Felix according to her knows  her station which is CNN with Anderson Cooper. I am told she sits and watches him for hours,so they place it on the loop until she has had enough. Well Felix has good taste because I love me some Anderson Cooper too.

                   Felix has an attitude and she wants what she wants when she wants it. Therefore when she needs to snuggle her mistress must stop what she is doing and rubs her head or feed her.It is funny and adorable all at the same time but it had me thinking just how little our pets require of us. In a world of strife and pain and with uncertainty around us isn't it wonderful that we can all turn to our pets even if its just for a moment. They do not need anything from us except our love attention at times.

                How unconditional are our pets love. It is one you can count on for sure. They do not need money, flashy cars or anything fancy.They just need you and they see you and by that I mean the real YOU, not the one you pretend to be when you are with everyone.They see your flaws.They see you first thing in the morning with out make up but they love you anyway. It really doesn't matter to them if you are black,brown,or white. If you are Christian or Muslim. Fat or slim.

             Regardless your cat or pet will love you forever and in their eyes you are their best thing. I wonder why humans cannot practice love as our pets. Felix loves her mistress as she is. Anyone who has pets know just what it is when you have a hard day,just to escape for a minute into your pet's world. Cat love knows no boundaries.

             If even for one day. Today can we be kind to one another. Tell someone close to you how much you love and appreciate them. Love yourself, be kind to yourself. Appreciate difference and respect each other. If our cats and pets can love without prejudices so can we. Let us change our mindset.I think the world needs some cat love at this time.Have a great day and if you have pets show them lots of love.

     

Respect for Teachers

                                 R.E.S.P.E.C.T !  Parents, Politicians, Media and everyone in the world find out what the word means for all teachers. Why is it so hard for our teachers to be respected across the globe ? Yes I am tired of the lip service that is given. Teachers are the most unappreciated, underpaid and underrated profession there is. Can someone tell me why? Because I have been trying to figure this out for the past twenty-five years.

                               When I was leaving to start college to pursue teaching I just could not understand how many people dissuade me from going along this path including family, friends and even a high school boyfriend at the time. I was told I could do better. Are you kidding me? Our teachers are our backbone of every society but yet politicians used them as pawns. I have come to realize that this is a common world practice where teachers are treated less than, but a country as mighty and over flowing with resources as America ought to be ashamed. Surely America can treat its teachers much better than how they are treated now

                             Big corporations can be given tax breaks but the budget cannot fund teachers pay or help them to buy classroom resources. Many teachers use their own money to buy resources for their classrooms. Many teachers also use their own money to buy children breakfast and lunch. It happens all the time no matter where you are located. Because that is simple the heart of a teacher. To be in this profession you must absolutely have a passion for it, because you have to put up with incompetence administration at times, deplorable parents some times and in some instances children with behavioral issues who are normally the reflection of their environment. There is also the possibility that you never know when someone mental will barge into your school and shoot you or your students. These are just few of the stresses that teachers have to deal with.

                     How many school shootings have there been in the states yet nothing further has been done with regards to gun safety to protect teachers or students.Instead it was voiced that teachers should be armed. I would like one of these Politicians to give up their senate seat for a week or two to  teach in a public school. I doubt they would last two days but they want to cut food programs and other social programs of schools. The irony is that all these elected officials most times are clueless to what  goes on in public school programs as they themselves may have gone to private schools and 95% of the time their children are privately schooled so why should we expect them to care.

                       To add insult to injury teachers,school staff and students are now ordered back to school with Covid 19 still not showing  signs of slowing down. Yes getting the economy back on track is important but what is the plan? and why should teachers and students be sacrificed? Does no one care for our safety, why we are always at the bottom of the totem pole? But will this be taken seriously when in the Fall a few teachers and students start dieing. Is this how we want it to play out? It is disgusting to hear several politicians just glossing over reopening schools as no big deal.

                      Therefore I have a preposition. Betsy Devoe and Kudlow and all those who are big on schools reopening go and take a teachers place. Lead by example as I am sure many teachers would agree. God damn it I would give up my pay for any politician to replace me in the classroom. Because I know that they are all clueless as to the amount of thankless work we do. But real teachers teach because of the children and it has to be a deep love within you that makes you get up each day to go into a profession that is always being disregarded and disrespected in one way or another. I do it for the children because it brings me joy to see their faces or to see them years after they have left my classroom and there is no amount of money that can replace that feeling.  

                            We see where  schools in Georgia have reopened with no social distancing. This is not good. It is going to come back to bite us big time. I am not advocating for schools to close forever all I am saying is what is the plan? Government officials respect our teachers by working with them to find a solution that works for all stake holders.
